FINE ART: The last opportunity to acquire from the artist’s estate some of his fine Woodscapes including favorite ones kept by the artist. Woodscapes is a term coined by Cecil to reflect that the entire piece was made of an assemblage of wood pieces, that are cut, shaved, carved, painted, and glued to create a finished image. His studio contained thousands of pieces of wood, bark, etc. of various colors and textures to be used to complete a piece. In fact, all that material, labeled in boxes, is to be also offered for sale. The artist would spend an average of 900 hours on a piece of artwork according to his brother David Rhodes and his later work would sell for thousands of dollars in his Pittsburgh gallery. They are often large sofa sized artworks and are simply amazing. The scale, research, detail, architectural rendering, treatment, skill, and color and texture must be seen in person to appreciate. There will be notebooks that photo catalog his years of work to peruse, which will demonstrate his depth of skill and scope.
We will be offering for sale on paper and art board Cecil’s early works, college works, NYC interior & industrial design work, and teaching demonstration artwork in this sale. Albeit they might be considered minor pieces to Cecil’s later work, many show that his talent was strong out of high school and just grew with his schooling at Pratt Institute. When he graduated from Pratt, he partnered with a design firm on Madison Ave. and worked on colored architectural renderings that represent mid century modern design.
While some work is in pencil, watercolor, pastel, conte crayon, or guache, it is not to be diminished by a more modest asking price. The paintings and drawings are simply wonderful to view, and excites the viewer viscerally as much as his Woodscapes, and many pieces are just simply great, while some may leave heads scratching as to what he was trying to create.
As I have years of experience in teaching art and in art appreciation perhaps I am more influenced and able to easily connect emotionally to the work . I cannot look at some of this work without seeing an extremely talented artist.
It is felt by his loving brother that a man so well known in the Bemus area and from his years as a teacher during the 1970’s at Maple Grove that many would like to purchase something modest as a remembrance and frame the art for their home. So every doodle, every experiment, was saved and will be available.
